How To Fake It Till You Make It--The Right Way
I’m sure you’ve at least heard of, if not already tried, the advice to ‘fake it till you make it’– pretend you have it and you’ll get it, sooner or later.
It’s got a pretty bad vibe about it, and people often say it in a derogatory manner, implying that one is cheating her way into places where she doesn’t belong.
It insinuates that you pretend to be someone you’re not because you’re not good enough to actually be at the next level.
And it also implies that you are looking to deliberately mislead people and gain from that in a unethical way.
So, let’s unpack this quickly and see what’s a better way to use it.
If you’re looking to use this to pretend you are a whole different person that who you really are, or to mislead your employer or a potential partner, I think you already know how it will end, so I’m not going to preach about it.
Putting on masks is not faking it till you make it, it’s living as someone else, without actually becoming who you aspire to be.
But if you’re looking to do some work on yourself, to become a better version of yourself, then read on.
There are a lot of studies on the power of the mind and how thinking in a more positive way about one’s self can improve the way you perceive yourself and boost self-image.
Other studies show how body posture influences your confidence and assertiveness.
Yet other studies have proved how others perceive you in a more positive manner when YOU perceive you as being better than you are.
As you can see, we live in a world of perceptions.
And it all starts within.
They way you see yourself is reflected in the way you carry yourself, think, react, talk, act, etc.
It’s everywhere. Change that, and you can change your world.
That is what I’m talking about.
Defining a better version of yourself and working towards it.
So, how do you do that?
Before anything else, ask yourself why do you want to ‘fake it till you make it’.
What’s the purpose of it?
What are you hoping to achieve?
What is that better version of yourself that you aspire to?
Then, think of how this person thinks, feels, and acts.
And start thinking, feeling, and behaving like that.
This is not about spending money, it’s about embracing a new approach to life. It’s about acting in a different way to get different results.
If you want to be more organised, think and act like a person who is organised.
If you want to be more confident, write down what a confident person does and go out there an act the same, as much as possible.
If you want to be more fit, start acting like a fit person.
And then take time to notice the subtle changes that start happening. Journal about them and celebrate them.
Then go out there and do some more of what works.
It’s a great way to short circuit your current mindset and give yourself permission to try new things.
But will it work for me? I hear you ask.
